OVYL softball is designed to meet all rules and requirements as decided upon by the USA and the Berks County Girls Softball League.  Being part of USA provides the OVYL the opportunity to provide the safest environment possible for girls to learn and develop correct softball skills.  Examples of most recent changes include eliminating illegal bats as determined by the USA recommendations and purchasing new helmets with face masks which are required by both USA and PIAA regulations.

OVYL Softball is an organization that was started in the 1970’s to encourage girls’ participation in organized sports.

It is designed on the primary belief that girls are here to have fun in a safe environment while encouraging good sportsmanship and learn the importance of teamwork that can help in all aspects of life.

The Softball program is  coordinated with the Oley Valley High School softball coaching staff so current skills, rules and regulations are always being addressed and girls will always be taught according to ASA/PIAA rules.  This association allows us to offer free skills, clinics and pitching instruction clinics year round.

Registration will close on March 1. 

 Please read through each page of the registration carefully to ensure that all information is accurate. 

A 12% early registration will be automatically applied to registrations placed before January 18. After the 18th, registrations will be full price. Please note that you should register your daughter for the group based on her age on as of 8/31/25.

Softball Commissioners

OVYL softball is designed for girls from the ages of 6-12 (up to 14 and 18 in the summer). This includes the different levels (8U, 10U, 12U, 14U, and 18U) who all participate in the Berks County Girls Softball League or the BCGSL for short. 

The 8U Team (Rookies in Baseball) will consist of girls in 1st and 2nd grade (U-8) and will be coach pitch with softer balls. Fundamentals and development of the girls is the main focus of this age group while having fun! This league will play other schools in Berks County.

The 10U Team (Minors in baseball) includes girls that are 10 and under in grades 3rd through 5th.  This league is designed to provide instruction in fundamentals and develop essential skills of the game in a fun and encouraging environment with emphasis on FUN.  Teams will travel to other schools within Berks County and participate in our own 10U tournament!

The 12U Team (Majors in Baseball) is for girls ages 12 and under.  These games are played using most of the USA rules and are designed to further develop skills necessary to prepare girls for Middle School and High School play. These age groups will also travel to other participating schools within Berks County and participate in selected tournaments. Playing time will be a minimum of  ½ game during regular-season games. Playing time during tournaments is at the coaches discretion and is not guaranteed as it is a play-to-win situation. Teams at this level are coached to be more competitive while still remaining fun.

Teams: The number of teams in each age group will depend on the number of girls at registration. Registration is open to all girls.  These teams will travel and play various Berks County teams and may also participate in outside tournaments.  Tryouts are not required for these teams, however; an evaluation may be conducted to determine placement on the teams.  The A team will only play other A teams and the B team will play only B teams (in regular games).  Both divisions play the same number of games (approximately 8-12 games, not including tournaments and postseason).  The OVYL will pay for one Away Tournament. The Home Tournaments are free to Oley Teams. Additional tournaments will be funded by the parents of the team.

There is no “cutting of girls” in any age group!

Berks County Girls Softball League (BCGSL) is the governing league for the OVYL softball program. In the past, the BCGSL has used January 1 as the date for determining the playing level; however, the date has changed!

To be consistent with USA Softball format, girls should be registered based on their age on September 1 of the previous year. The result is that girls born between 9/1 and 12/31 will have an extra year for eligibility. For example, a girl who was 8 on 8/31/25 but turned 9 on September 1, 2025 is still eligible for 8U in Spring 2026. Please see the chart below to help with selecting the correct age for players. 

The information below is for the previous summer season. This will be updated once we have details for the next summer season. 

Keep playing into the summer and register your daughter for our summer U14 softball team. Players should be in grades 6th to 8th (as of May 1) and be at least 12 years old.

Cost: $200. A $25 discount will be automatically applied to registrations completed before April 30. Registration closes May 15.
