2023-2024 Basketball - Registration Closed

Firstly, thank you so much for registering in advance. This allows us to continue to plan for the Winter 2023/2024 basketball season. Registration will run from September 1st, 2022 - Nov 1st, 2022. Registering your child after Nov 1st will result in a $25 late fee.

The season typically runs from the beginning of December through to the end of February. During this time, K-2 grade participants practice on Saturday's at OVES and they will receive a jersey as part of their registration.

For our 3rd-6th boys and girls participants, evaluations will be held the week of November 13th. Once the evaluations are completed, your child will be assigned to a team in Sports Engine. Practices are typically twice a week, Monday-Thursday starting the first week of December. A jersey will be provided as part of their registration.

For our 5th-6th grade boys/girls travel teams - their uniforms are not included in the registration fee and will be a separate cost. More information will be provided on this as we get closer to the season.

Thank you,

Michael O'Brien, OVYL Basketball Commissioner
& Matt Hoch, OVYL Co-Commissioner

Basketball Program

MISSION STATEMENT

The purpose of the OVYL Basketball program is the following:

  • Instruct boys and girls of the Oley Valley from Grades K through 6 on the fundamentals of the game of basketball.
  • To promote teamwork, good sportsmanship and qualities of good citizenship

OVERVIEW OF PROGRAM & EACH AGE GROUP

K- 2ND GRADE

  • Co-Ed program for boys and girls from Kindergarten through 2nd grade.
  • Practice one day per week.
  • The emphasis at this level is developing fundamental skills (dribbling, passing, shooting, defense, etc.).
  • The kids play with a 27 inch ball on 8 foot rims.
  • We focus primarily on skills development.
  • We encourage parents to get involved and help with the practices. We always need a few parent volunteers to help with practices as directed by the coaches.  Responsibilities may include help with organizing drills, encouraging, participating in drills, etc.

3rd – 4th GRADE GIRLS (REC)

  • 3rd and 4th Girls.  2nd Grade girls may play up with coaches’ evaluation.
  • Practice two nights per week plus open gym 1 day per week.
  • The emphasis at this level is developing fundamental skills (dribbling, passing, shooting, defense, etc.).
  • Girls play with a 27 inch ball on 10 foot rims.
  • Typically 12-14 games are played against other teams.

3rd – 4th GRADE BOYS (REC)

  • Same as 3rd and 4th Girls, except the boys use a 28.5 inch ball.    Man-to-Man defense picks up at volleyball line.

5th – 6th GRADE BOYS (REC)

  • At 5th and 6th grade boys the boys are evaluated and assigned to either the travel teams or REC teams.  TRAVEL is for the advanced players and REC is for novice, beginners or players of lesser skill/ ability.
  • 5th and 6th grade boys REC program is virtually identical to 3rd and 4th Boys REC program, except defense is allowed at half court and pressing is permitted in the last 2 minutes of each half.

5th – 6th GRADE BOYS (TRAVEL)

  • Reading Berks Youth Basketball League (RBYBL) is a TRAVEL LEAGUE for the advanced players.  Players must be proficient in ball handling, footwork, passing, shooting and be able to handle playing under full court pressure.  This league follows all PIAA rules including full court press, zone defenses, etc.
  • 5th graders can be double rostered on JV and Varsity Teams.  6th Graders cannot be double rostered.
  • Advanced  4th graders are permitted to play on JV team and 5th graders on Varsity Team based on the results of the evaluation process.

5th – 6th GRADE GIRLS (REC)

  • OVYL does not participate in a girls Travel League.  This may be considered (at the discretion of the coaches) in future seasons to tailor girls program after Boys for 5th and 6th Grade.

Girls 5th and 6th REC is same as 3rd and 4th Girls REC for the sake of a few different rules and uses a 28.5 inch ball.
