Specific Grade Rules and Regulations
1st
and 2nd Grade Boys and Girls
·
An intermediate size ball (27.5”) will be used.
·
8 foot basket height.
·
Free throws will not be played at this level of
play. There will be no turnovers until the 5th game. Referees must
explain to the players on every infraction what the infraction was..
·
Games consist of four 6-minute running-time
quarters. The clock stops for all timeouts. Equal playing time
rules apply. Each player must be played the same amount of minutes
per game. 3-minutes into each quarter the clock will stop for a
player substitutions. Coaches match-up players during every
substitution period to even out the more skilled players. There will
be no overtime at this level. Half time will be 4 minutes.

Each team is allowed two 1-minute timeouts per half
with no carryovers.
·
Offensive players are allowed up to 5 seconds in
the key..
·
Defenders must remain within 6 feet of the player
they are guarding when that player is in front court and within 10
feet of the basket. Defenders can pickup the offense at the 3 point
line.
·
Pressing, traps or backcourt guarding is not
allowed. Zone defenses are not allowed.
·
Double-teaming is not allowed.
·
Score will be kept at this level.
Every quarter the
score will be reset to zero.
·
Referees will undertake an instructional approach
to calling the game, and will use appropriate discretion when
calling traveling, back court, double dribble, 5-seconds in the key,
etc. There will be no turnovers at this level of play until the 4th
game has been played.

3rd and 4th Grade Boys
and Girls

Free throws are shot from a line 2 feet (line or
area) in front of the normal line. Shooters may cross the line as
they shoot, but may not move toward the basket for a rebound until
the ball hits the rim. Free throws are not allowed until each team
has played 4 games. There will be no turnovers until the 5th game.

minutes per game. 4-minutes into each quarter the clock will stop

Intermediate size ball (28.5) for boys 27.5
for girls will be used.
·
10 foot basket height.
·
Games consist of four 8-minute quarters with a running
clock. Overtimes are 3 minutes. Max 1 OT. Coaches can agree on no
overtime. Half time will be 4 minutes.
·
Each team is allowed two 1-minute timeouts per
half with no carryovers. One 1-minute timeout in overtime..
·
Once the ball crosses the half court line, high
school rules apply. The 5-second closely guarded call will be
enforced.
·
Double-teaming is allowed in the paint area only.
·
Pressing is allowed in the last 2-minutes of the
game. Teams cannot press when they are up by 10 points. Pressing is
allowed during overtime.
·
When a team has a lead of 20 or more points going
into the half the score for both teams is set to zero at half time.
·
Each player must be played at least 16 minutes per
game. Coaches can substitute at any time during the game but must
play players equal during all games.
·
Free throw shooters will be not be allowed to cross
the line as they shoot. Players will not be allowed to rebound until
the ball hits the rim after the free throw shooter has shot the
ball.
·
OVYL highly encourages the teaching of man-to-man
defensive principles. Zones defenses are not allowed.

7th and 8th
Grade Boys
·
Regulation size ball.
·
7-minute stop-time quarters.
·
Each team is allowed three 1-minute timeouts and
two 20-second timeouts per game.
·
Overtimes are 2 minutes, maximum one OT.
·
Halftimes are 3 minutes. Quarter breaks are 1
minute.
·
The 5-second closely guarded call will be enforced.
·
Pressing, traps, and backcourt guarding is allowed.
·
Double-teaming is allowed in the key area only.
·
When a team has a lead of 20 or more points they
may not guard in the backcourt. The score will be publicly kept on
the scoreboard at all times.
·

defensive principles. Zones defenses are allowed.
